American Music Awards Recap: List of 2009 AMA Winners

As expected, the 2009 American Music Awards was the Michael Jackson and Taylor Swift show. This was not surprising as Swift led all AMA nominees with six award nominations while Jackson was nominated posthumously for five awards. Members of the Jackson family came to the stage to collect Michael’s four 2009 AMA Awards hardware while Swift hid at a concert rehearsal in London during her live acceptance speeches for her five victories in order to avoid another Kanye West interruption.

Whitney Houston performed and collected a lifetime achievement award. Other memorable performances included ones by: Lady Gaga, Black Eyed Peas, and Janet Jackson along with former American Idol contestants turned singing stars Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Chris Daughtry, and last year’s winner Adam Lambert, who might have given the most shocking performance of the night. Interestingly, there were only a handful of performers actually singing live (not uncommon), and most of them were the former Idols.

The 2009 American Music Awards aired at 8/7PM CST on ABC.
